Hi, I'm Valerie,
I am a Canadian printmaker specializing in relief print and lithography, with a strong focus on hand-printed techniques. My process begins with figurative drawings that evolve through sketches and further transformation during platemaking and printing. This journey allows me to explore the inner world of my subjects, resulting in a series of unconventional portraits that reflect on existence and perceptions of self.
Born in Ottawa, Canada, I earned a BFA from Concordia University in 2008. In 2010, I was honored to be selected as a Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholar, which led me to Tokyo. There, I completed an MFA in printmaking at Tokyo University of the Arts, specializing in ball grain plate lithography. Printmaking remains my primary form of expression, with a focus on hand-printed techniques. Over the years, I have held solo exhibitions in Canada, Japan, Australia, Norway, and Korea, and I’ve participated in numerous group exhibitions and artist residency programs worldwide.
Course Content
The course has 9 modules for 7 hours of learning and practicing. You can pause and replay the videos as much as you want. The course is suitable for everyone. You can follow them as presented, as it will start from the basics and progress to more advanced lessons, or jump in at any point that suits your needs.

MODULE 1 & 2
Introduction and Materials
Start your journey with an overview of relief printmaking, understanding its rich history and core principles. Dive into the essential materials—from various blocks and inks to rollers and barens—and master the art of tool sharpening to ensure you are fully prepared for your creative process.
MODULE 3 & 4
Linocut Fundamentals and Printing Preparation
Master the linocut process for single-color prints, from transferring your image to advanced carving techniques and proofing. Learn professional printing preparation, including paper tearing methods, registration options, and the nuances of rolling ink to achieve the perfect impression.
MODULE 5 & 6
Multiblock Printing and Woodcut
Dive into the vibrant world of multicolor printing. You will learn the simplest options for adding secondary colors, how to use a registration jig for precision, and the creative jigsaw linocut technique. Additionally, you will explore the traditional craft of woodcut, covering everything from block preparation and carving to the final printing process.
MODULE 7 & 8
Reduction Printing and Creative Alternatives
Master the "suicide print" or reduction printing method, using pins and tabs to ensure perfect registration across multiple layers. Then, expand your creative horizons with printing without cutting, where you’ll learn to produce unique art using found objects, botanical elements, and even Lego blocks.
MODULE 9
Post-printing Considerations
Wrap up your creative journey by learning the essential final steps. This module focuses on the professional handling of your finished work, ensuring your prints are properly cared for and ready for display or sale once they leave the block.

Practical exercises
Theory is important, but what makes you a true artist is practice... Lots of practice! You'll find lots of topics and practical training to get started with and from which to get inspiration. I will show you some tricks that will help develop your home lithography skills.
